The School of Safety Science and Emergency Management was established on February 14, 2019, as a highly interdisciplinary institution founded to address major national needs in public safety strategy and emergency management. The school integrates the Department of Safety Science and Engineering from the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management from the School of Management, and the China Institute of Emergency Management Research.

The school currently has 82 faculty and staff members, including Professor Fan Weicheng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and convener of the Safety Science and Engineering Discipline Appraisal Group under the State Council.abroad, including the University of Liverpool (UK), Kyoto University (Japan), the University of South Australia, City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Wuhan University. Composed primarily of young and middle-aged academics as the backbone, the faculty is a high-caliber team characterized by advanced educational qualifications, well-balanced knowledge structure, strong enterprising spirit, and broad international perspectives.

The school boasts two first-level doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations in Safety Science and Engineering (a key discipline in Hubei Province) and Management Science and Engineering. It offers three professional master's degree programs in Safety Engineering, Engineering Management, and Public Administration. At the undergraduate level, it provides three programs: Safety Engineering (among the first batch of national first-class specialty construction sites), Emergency Management (the nation's first such specialty construction site), and Big Data Management and Application.
